The Assam Rifles today announced the capture of a cadre of the Yung Aung faction of the NSCN-K in Mon. Reading out a prepared statement, Inspector General Assam Rifles-North (IGAR-N) PC Nair told the media in Kohima that the captured cadre was involved in the May 25 ambush of Assam Rifles personnel near Tobu, in which 2 two AR soldier were killed and 4 others injured.
He was identified as Major General Yanghang alias Mopa and described as the “the highest ranking cadre of the Yung Aung led NSCN-K in the Indian side of the border and “chief architect of extortion” and the controller of “all operations in the areas under him.
According to Nair, Yanghang was captured around 11:20 am, June 21 in Aboi, Mon in a combined operations conducted by Indian Army, Special Forces and Assam Rifles units. “Troops were able to identify the vehicle and in a swift, clinical operation were able to apprehend these insurgents before they could escape,” he said.
Terming the operation as a “massive victory for the security forces and the state government,” he said that the GOC-in-Chief, Eastern Command of the Indian Army Lt. Gen. MM Naravane visited the forward areas of Nagaland on June 5 and had also announced a reward of Rs. 5 lakh for information regarding the people involved in the May 25 ambush.
He also appealed to all cadres to give up violence and join the peace initiative of the Government of India.
As per the statement, other cadres alongwith Yanghang was arrested but the IG made no mention of it. There was also no mention of capture of any weapons. He refused to take queries from the media persons and left the room after reading out the statement.
Police sources later confirmed that Yanghang alongwith two others were captured in the operation on June 21. All three were handed over the police, the sources said.
