High rate of teenage pregnancy and early marriage in Wokha

Wokha, July 27 (MExN): “Wokha district has highest rate of teenage pregnancy and early marriage and to address this issue sensitization and educating the teenagers about the medical complication and consequences to lower the rate is the need of the hour,” said Sr. Supervisor, ICDS, Wokha Erenbeni Kikon while speaking at an advocacy programme. 

According to a DIPR report Kikon was addressing the Block Level IEC and Advocacy on Poshan Adhiyaan on the theme ‘Impact and Implication of Teenage Pregnancy and Early Marriage’ organized by Department of Social Welfare, Wokha in collaboration with Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) at community hall, Wokha village on July 27.

She added that teenage pregnancy and early marriage happens due to “ignorance and experimentation” and therefore urged the young girls attending the programme to set high goals, challenges to keep themselves engaged and become a responsible member to the society.

Women Welfare Officer, DLCW, Dr. Wonchano E Enny, District Coordinator, Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojna (PMMVY) Renabeni Murry and IT Staff, Mhathung from Shaki-One Stop Centre highlighted to the gathering about the various Government schemes and policies introduced for the benefit of rural women and girl child. 

Chairman, Wokha Village Council and Chairperson Wokha village Eloe Hoho who also delivered short speech during the programme expressed appreciation to the department for organizing such event in their village to educate and sensitize the people.

Mahila Shaki Kendra (MSK) also distributed sanitary pads under Beti Bachao Beti Padhao. The programme was chaired by CDPO, Wokha Myanlumo.
