High voltage campaigns for the first election to a 12-member Sinlung Hills Council (SHC) came to an end on Sunday evening amid allegations and counter allegations between the ruling Mizo National Front (MNF) and opposition Congress.

Officials of state Election department said that the campaign has ended at 4 pm, and that any form of electioneering, public meetings, publication of advertisements, press conferences by political parties, interviews and panel discussions in electronic or print media has been strictly prohibited after the lapse of the campaign period.

SHC will go to the polls for the first time on November 5 and results will be declared on the same day.

A total of 20,914 voters, including 10,405  female voters would exercise their franchise to decide the fate of 42 contesting candidates.

The voters would cast their votes at 38 polling stations where ballot papers would be used.

The upcoming polls in most constituencies will be mainly a straight fight between the MNF-HPC alliance and Congress.

In some constituencies, the election will be a five-cornered contest.

While the MNF-HPC alliance has fielded candidates in all the seats, the Congress is contesting in 6 seats. There are four Independents with the support of its allies.

SHC was established in July 2018 as a result of the peace accord signed between Mizoram government and Hmar militant group on April 2 that year.

The council will have 12 elected members and 2 nominated members.
