Highlights of scholarship for students in Nagaland

The state’s department of school education is implementing a number of centrally and state sponsor scholarship schemes for students in Nagaland.  

Pre-Matric Scholarship for Minority students

This scheme is being implemented from the year 2010-11 in the state. However, this scheme is covered under Direct Benefits Transfer from the year 2015-16 by the Govt. of India.  

“For the year 2015-16, an amount of Rs. 7, 67, 10, 918 (Rs. seven crore sixty seven lacs ten thousand and nine hundred and eighteen) as 100% centrally share was sanctioned for 34507 students by the Govt of India through DBT mode,” according to the annual administrative report 2016-17 of school education department tabled in the just concluded assembly session by minister for school education & SCERT Yitachu.  

For 2016-17, altogether 26, 890 students have registered and their verification of application and e-payment is under process through online.  

National scheme for incentive for girl’s secondary education

This scheme is covered under Direct Benefit Transfer scheme launched by the Govt of India for the girl students at secondary level. During 2015-16, the Govt of India has selected 411 girl students from the state under which Rs. 3000 would be credited to the account of each student in Canara Bank. Payment is to be made on maturity after three years.  

Pre metric scholarship belonging to Schedule Tribe students studying in Class IX & X

The scheme is being implemented from the last financial year 2015-16 under the Ministry of Tribal Affairs. With the directive of the Government of India, the department has disbursed the scholarship through Direct Benefit Transfer to 19, 496 students in collaboration with Axis Bank Kohima during 2016-17 financial year out of 42, 048 students sanctioned by the GOI. The remaining will be carried over to the next financial year as per the scheme guidelines.  

Children Education Assistance Fund

This scholarship is a state sponsored scheme which as implemented by the state government from 1992. During 2015-16 the department has disbursed Rs. 10, 14, 000 for 1119 meritorious students. From this fiscal year (2016-17) the department is on the process to disburse the scholarship trough Direct Benefit Transfer for 1352 student beneficiaries.  

Stipend for girl students at secondary stage

This is a state sponsored stipend scheme for those girls studying in class IX and X at Govt. High Schools and GHSS who are from economically weak family. Each headmaster of government schools can nominate two girls from each Class and submit with their PCR at the Directorate for disbursement of stipend. The department has disbursed Rs. 11, 72,000 to 1172 girls students during 2015-16.  

Streamlining of scholarship section

The report stated that aiming at transparency and accountability the department has taken many steps to disburse the scholarship from both centrally sponsor scheme and state sponsored scheme through beneficiary Bank Account only from this current financial year.
