A Botoking
Dimapur | August 4
Even as the Nagaland State AIDS Control Society (NSACS) scandal involving a missing Rs.3.75 crores plays out its own drama, a story of a very different nature is unfolding at the Dimapur Civil Hospital. In the General Ward of Dimapur Civil Hospital, lies an HIV infected man by the name of Nzanthung Yanthan. One look at the man, with his emaciated face and disease-wrecked body, and its bears evidence to the fact that he is suffering from AIDS (Acquired Immuno Deficiency Syndrome).
His wife has also been infected by the same disease. His two sons, Rimben of three years and Achenthung of nine months are now facing a bleak future, with no help being extended from the family or friends. His wife said this : “Though we have sent word of our desperate situation to our families and friends, except for my sister-in-law, everyone has deserted us in our time of need.”
Moanungsang Longkumer, outreachw orker of an NGO, Prodigals Home said: “This man’s road to recovery is very long and he greatly needs sustained nourishment. Even now, the medical bills are averaging Rs.500 – Rs.1000 on a daily basis.” He added that the two sons are in need of food, clothes and all the basic necessities that a human being needs to survive. Prodigals home is presently taking care of the man, though it is presenting itself to be an uphill task. Wapang and Nochet, co workers of Moanungsang are also doing their best to help out in this matter.
The positive aspect of this sad story is the fact that a few NGOs such as Akimbo society, NEDHIV, Bethesda, Oasis, World Vision and Prodigals Home have extended their assistance in the form of donations to this cause. Apart from this, individuals such as the Dimapur DC’s PA, Alemla from DDACC and Temjen Jamir have also contributed their bit to help this man. The sad fact remains that, inspite of all these donations, there is still a lot that has to be taken care of.
“Public action in these desperate situations can bring about a change to both the victim and the helper. The joy gained is immense.” Moanungsang said. Those interested in contributing to the well-being of this man’s family are kindly requested to contact Moanungsang at Prodigal’s Home.
