HM Shah assures COCOMI on Manipur’s territorial integrity

Union Home Minister Amit Shah has reportedly given verbal assurance that there will be no change in the “territorial integrity” and “administrative setup” of Manipur because of the outcome of the Naga peace talks.

 

However, COCOMI has expressed its dissatisfaction as the Union Home Minister refused to give a written assurance. In this regard, COCOMI will be convening a public meeting on November 29 to deliberate on the meeting between Amit Shah and the Committee. The next course of move of COCOMI will depend on the outcome of the November 29 public meeting.

 

The Union Home Minister gave the reported verbal assurance during a meeting with the 18-member delegation of Coordination Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) in New Delhi on Monday night.

 

Shah, however, refused to give a written assurance demanded by COCOMI saying that he had not given such written assurance to anyone.

 

Union Home Minister of State for Home Affairs, G Kishan Reddy; BJP National General Secretary (organisation), BL Santosh; Union Home Secretary, Ajaykumar Bhalla; Joint Secretary (NE), Satyendra Garg; Manipur Chief Minister, N Biren Singh and Manipur Education Minister, Th Radheshyam were among others who attended the Monday night meeting between COCOMI and Union Home minister.

 

The Monday night meeting between COCOMI delegation and the Union Home minister commenced from 10 pm and lasted till 11:15 pm and deliberated on the confusions and apprehensions being felt by the people here because of the Naga peace talks, a statement of COCOMI here said.

 

During the meeting, a memorandum giving a "detail justification" objecting any move to distort Manipur’s territorial integrity was submitted by COCOMI to the Union Home minister.

 

From the COCOMI side, the Union Home minister was pressed to give a written assurance. However, he refused to do so saying that he had not given written assurance to anyone so far and there is no reason to doubt the verbal assurance given by Home Minister of the country.

 

Meanwhile, COCOMI urged the people to continue staging "alert protests".

 

Amid the ongoing "alert campaign" on the possible outcome of the Naga peace talks, COCOMI has been boycotting the ongoing Manipur Sangai Festival which had already commenced from November 24 and due to end on November 30.

 

Meanwhile, a delegation of COCOMI currently in New Delhi will be coming back to Imphal on Wednesday.
