Hoho JAC ‘correct’ MP Konyak’s figure

Dimapur, April 21 (MExN): The guidelines and methodology on delimitation issued by the Delimitation Commission of India says that delimitation for increase of assembly and parliamentary constituencies will take place in the first census after 2026 and not in 2026 as claimed by Associate Member Wangyuh Konyak, the tribe Hoho JAC clarifies. A note from the JAC convener E Konpemo Ovung stated that in this case, the actual delimitation including increase of A/C seats will start only by mid-2030s. The remark of the MP reflects his ignorance on the delimitation process, the JAC opined.

According to the JAC, the ongoing delimitation exercise is to be implemented without increase of seats and the process envisages entitlement of assembly seats based on census 2001 population figure. The JAC also mentioned that the first delimitation proposal based on tribal and non-tribal population was rejected by the people and the second was forwarded on April 10, 2007. The second proposal of the State Member delimitation Commission was rejected by the DCI and not by the Associate members so MP Konyak should not mislead the people, the JAC stated.
