Kohima, January 20 (MExN): In exercise of the powers conferred under sub-section (2) of Section 4 of the Census Act, 1948, the Home Department, Government of Nagaland, has appointed census officers for the Census of India 2027 within their respective jurisdictions.
According to the notification, all deputy commissioners have been appointed as Principal Census Officers for their respective districts. All additional deputy commissioners (headquarters) have been designated as District Census Officers, while additional deputy commissioners with independent charge have been appointed as Sub-Divisional Census Officers for their respective sub-divisions.
All SDOs (Civil) and EACs have been designated as Charge Officers for their respective circles or charges. CEOs or ADCs have been appointed as City Census Officers, while ADCs, SDOs (Civil) and EACs will function as Town Census Officers within their respective jurisdictions. Necessary orders in this regard will be issued by the respective Principal Census Officers.
The Home Department further stated that under sub-section (4) of the Census Act, 1948, the officers appointed have the power to appoint census officers within their respective jurisdictions.
As per Section 11 of the Census Act, 1948, any census officer or any person lawfully required to assist in the conduct of the census who refuses to perform the duties assigned under the Act or obstructs another person from performing such duties shall be punishable with a fine of up to Rs.1,000.
In the event of conviction, the person may also be liable to imprisonment for a term which may extend up to three years.
