Home, the soldier returned to die

Dimapur, July 14(MExN): In a heartrending twist of irony so tragic, a jawan of the 9th IRB finally returned home from war, only to take his own life, today. ‘Welcome Home, The Daring Ninth’ (from loved and dear ones of 9th IRB families) could not be for Havildar Chubatoshi.

Barely an hour after a joyous reunion with families at 9th IR (NAP) Bn. HQ at Saijang (Peren) Havildar Chubatoshi of the ‘B’ Coy turned his service weapon, an AK assault rifle, on himself and ended his life. In a room in the barrack at around 2:10 pm the jawan shot himself from under the jaws. The bullet exited from the top of his head. He was with the first batch of the battalion which arrived at the HQ last night, after two years of battling the naxals of Chhattisgarh.

According to sources, the deceased taking such a step can only be suspected to be having depression due to “domestic problems.” However, it is observed that a more menacing reason could be behind the suicide of the jawan, as is in the case of all war-returned soldiers. Post-war trauma is a severe – and common– psychological aftereffect which afflict war men who have been intensely exposed to environment of extreme violence and bloodshed. The civil solidarity group that was in Dimapur recently to plead for withdrawal of the IRB from Chhattisgarh had also informed newsmen that the Naga jawans in Chhattisgarh were given to sever hallucinations, prone to morbidity and also exhibited suicidal tendencies.

It may be mentioned here that earlier today, a team from the State Police Headquarters visited the first batch to welcome the jawans home. The visiting team was lead by K Kire, I.G (HQ) and Porkumzak, DIG Ranges Dimapur, Commandant NAPTC and the Commandant of the IR Bn. The first batch of two companies (182 jawans) returned home yesterday evening and have been stationed at the new headquarter. The second batch is expected with the next one week while the rest is expected to be home by the end of this month.
