Retrospection and honouring past legacies while honing the path for a better future were recurring premises as the Ao Kaketshir Telongjem Dimapur (Ao Students’ Union Dimapur, ASUD) yearlong Golden Jubilee was formally commemorated here today at Senden Riju Purana, Bazar.

With the theme, ‘Arangshhidi’ (honing and sharpening), the clarion message of the jubilee to all the students was look back, introspect and sharpen to march into a brighter future.

‘Only God and you can make you own path,’ said the theme speaker, Amba Jamir.

Touching upon the demographic dividend India is heading with estimated highest youth population by 2020, Jamir, who is also the Executive Director of Sustainable Development Forum, Nagaland (SFDN), asked the gathering, where are we? At the same time, he asked whether the elders are giving enough space to the youth to progress.

Citing data from Census 2011 numbers analysed by The Hindu, which highlighted that there were 116 job seekers in India, out of whom 84 were literate, Jamir wondered whether the Naga in general and the Ao youth in particular were mere job seekers.

To this end, Jamir called for skill development mission as well as being employable not mere literate or job seekers.

Travel and discover new ideas as knowledge is the best teacher. The thirst is more in unknown terrain as one becomes complacent at home, he implied.

Learn from others and one another with humility, but at the same time, know your rights too, he added.

Dwelling on culture, Jamir exhorted them to value it but with a disclaimer. “Don’t let it ‘bind you.’ Every generation creates their own culture.”

The SDFN director also batted for issues like gender sensitivity to be part of the progress. In doing so, be strategic and reach out to older generation through consultation, awareness and dialogue, he noted.

Meanwhile, K Temjen Jamir, the Convenor of Jubilee Planning Committee challenged the youth to take hold of the city as their own and contribute to its development.

“You are no longer a temporary visitor in Dimapur. Become owners of the land with your good deeds and sharing the fruits with other communities,” stated the Editor of the Ao Language daily ‘Tir Yimyim’ MLA Moatoshi Longkumer, who gave the exhortation, told the youth take leadership mantle and lead from the front in compatibility with others.

A new commitment

As a part of the celebration, several resolutions were passed. Among others, it was resolved to collaborate with skill development with government for avenue in skill development and thrust for UPSC/NPSC examinations.

It also decided to observe the World Environment Day each year with related activities.   The ASUD also resolved to take care of the jubilee park as well as the Yimkong Sidewalk and Mural, the projects undertaken as a part of the celebration.

The lengthiest wall painting in Northeast was inaugurated on December 6, near at PWD colony Dimapur. The public park-cum-drinking water booth at Naga Shopping Arcade, Supermarket will also open soon.

A new commitment to become the ‘true seeker of knowledge’ was also made on the occasion.   The ASUD also commit itself not to be dependent on others and further pledged to “serve with honesty and integrity” in all spheres.

Earlier, the Jubilee souvenir was also released to mark the occasion. The formal session was followed by lunched, followed by a variety entertainment programme in the evening.
