Kohima | July 14 : A misty weather was not deterrent enough as hundreds of motor sports enthusiasts thronged the Kohima local ground to witness the flagging off of the exciting 2nd Horsepower Challenge Thursday, July 14. Nagaland Adventure Club (NAC) is organizing the event.
National champion, Rehan Khan along with Shujaat Khan, Diganta Baruah, Anand Sereng, Gagan Kapoor, Anthony, Anu Suohu, Hymal Pathak, Ipak Boro, Jayanta Bovah, Siddhartha Sankar Saikai, qualified for the semifinals in the Supercross leg of the tournament. Nineteen riders had taken part in this leg. The semi-finals will be held on Saturday.
Friday will see drivers taking part in Autocross. There will be two categories - 1000cc (above) where thirty-eight drivers have already registered. In the 1000cc category, eight competitors have registered. Cash prizes for the event which is sponsored by the state government, carries Rs. 35,000, Rs. 25,000 and Rs. 15,000 for the Autocross (1000cc above) respectively. Below 1000cc category carries Rs. 30,000, Rs.20, 000 and Rs. 10,000. For bikes the prizes are Rs. 30,000, Rs.20, 000 and Rs. 10,000. In the photography competition, the winner will take away Rs. 15,000 and Rs. 10,000 respectively.
Earlier, Commissioner Secretary, Tourism Himato Zhimomi IAS, graced the inaugural function as the chief guest. He congratulated the organizers for successfully conducting the event adding that the future of adventure and motor sports lies with the Nagaland Adventure Club. Zhimomi emphasized that equipments are vital in such events and urged the NAC to make sure that the participants are prepared with the right and proper safety equipments. Exhorting the participants, he said that winning is not important rather participation is what matters. It is a matter of pride for the organizers and for the state that Ten Sports is covering the three-day event while a photography contest is also being organized by Gallery Monet, where around 15 photographers are reported to have registered.
Leaving no stone unturned in its effort to promote adventure sports, the NAC which mostly consists of self-employed members, have contributed personally in cash and kind to make the event a ‘one-of-a-kind’. It is indeed a huge compliment for the NAC that a majority of the participants are from outside the state. Presently the NAC has 22 members. The president NAC, Paul Rutsa disclosed that the club still has more programmes in the pipeline. He also expressed gratitude to the state government and all sponsors, while also looking forward for support in the future. Final race for both Supercross and Autocross will be held on Saturday, July 16.
