
Medziphema, September 1 (MExN): Three days trainer’s training on ‘production technology of underexploited horticulture crops of NER’ under the theme ‘Crops for the future’ was organized by Central Institute of Horticulture, DAC & FW, Ministry of Agriculture, GOI, Medziphema at Training centre, CIH, Medziphema from August 29 to 31, for the State Government officials of Horticulture Department.
The objective of the training was to equip the horticulture officials to become master trainers in their respective district on underexploited horticulture crops.
Addressing the programme, Dr. Lallan Ram, Director, CIH stated the importance of underexploited crops in NER and the need of such kind of training to popularize these crops in the region which has a huge potential. He also deliberated that inspite of these crops having wide diversity in NER it is still being underutilized and underexploited. Therefore, it is the role of each individual trainee to be well equipped with the production technology of underexploited horticulture crops so that the information can be disseminated to the farming community.
Resource persons were Dr. K.K. Jindal, UGC Emeritus Fellow, Retd ADG Horticulture ICAR & Ex-Director of Research, UHF Solan, Himachal Pradesh & CAU, Imphal, Manipur, Dr. V.K. Verma & Dr. H. Rymbai, Scientist, ICAR Research Complex for Northeast Region, Umiam, Meghalaya. They presented on various topics like prospects and strategies for production of higher quality underexploited temperate fruits, diversification of underutilized temperate fruits in sub-temperate and sub-tropical zones of NEHR, underutilized crops, trends, challenges and opportunities in the 21st century, constraints and strategies for the development of underexploited horticulture crops, underutilized vegetable and spice crops, root and tuber crops and underexploited flowers of NER.
The valedictory function started off with an opening song by DKs Entertainment group incharge, Sentinungba Longchar, HO, Peren. Speeches on behalf of the participants were delivered by Mr. Meyasashi, DHO, Mokokchung and Dr. Temjenmenla, AHO, Zunheboto. Dr. Lallan Ram, Director, CIH also exhorted the participants to work as an ambassador for transfer of technology at the farmer’s field and expressed hope that the information gathered and knowledge gained during the training will go a long way in helping the farmers of the state.
Feedback forms were evaluated and the participants expressed their gratitude to the institute for conducting training which is very important and relevant topic for the region. Certificates along with reading materials were distributed to all the participants.
Altogether 27 participants from 10 districts attended the training programme. The training programme was coordinated by Shisarenla Aier, Training In-Charge, CIH, Medziphema.
