A house was burnt down in the dead of night in a remote Rengma village of neighbouring Karbi Anglong, Assam.
Last night, around 12:15am, “unknown miscreants” set on fire the house of one John Reso Rengma in Balijan II village under Chokihola Police Station, Bokajan Sub Division, informed the SP of Karbi Anglong, Mugdhajyoti Mahanta. There were no casualties as the house is “currently uninhabited,” informed the SP, and that investigation is on.
An FIR of the case has not yet been filed, however, confirmed SDPO of Bokajan, SB Raimedhi, also informing that if this is not done, a suo moto case will be registered soon; investigations have commenced from last night nonetheless. The Assam police have already looked at the place of occurrence, and initial investigation suggests a case of arson, stated the SDPO. The DC of Karbi Anglong, P.K. Buragohain, noted that this was the work of “antisocial elements.” Both the SDPO and DC confirmed they do not apprehend any escalation of violence in the region that was badly hit in December 2013.
It may be noted that both central and state security forces in the region have been reduced despite assurances on the contrary to the Rengma people, who continue to live in relief camps in Karbi Anglong in hundreds out of fear of going back home.
