Parents preferring private schools over government schools in Nagaland is an established fact; the magnitude in terms of absolute numbers, however, is not easily fathomable and hard to come by.

The Unified District Information System for Education (UDISE+) data by the Union Ministry of School Education (formerly Ministry of Human Resource Development) provides some answers.

As per the ‘School Education Dashboard’ on the Ministry’s website accessed on August 24, Nagaland has 2,752 schools catering a total of 3,76,301 students. The data on the Dashboard are based on UDISE+ 2018-19 (Provisional).

Out of 2,752 schools, there were 2,007 government and 745 private schools.

However, things get interesting if one looks at the number of enrollments in these schools.

As per the Dashboard, while the numbers of government schools were nearly three times more than the private schools, in terms of students, the latter had over 1 lakh extra.

In other words, 745 private schools were catering to 2,38,216 students while 2,007 government schools had only 1,38,085 pupils – a difference of 1,00,131.

The student- school ratio, as a result, was 319.75 students per school in private and 68.80 in government.

Accordingly, out of 32,015 teachers in Nagaland, 19,666 were in government schools while 12,129 were in private schools.

In terms of sheer numbers, the teacher-pupil ratio, thus, was much higher in government schools.

For every teacher in government schools, there were 7 students (7.03) as against 19 (19.64) in private schools.

Nationally, out of 15.50 lakh schools, 10.83 lakh were government while 3.25 lakh were private. 84, 6145 schools were designated as ‘Aided’ while 55,954 were slotted as ‘Others.’

In terms of students, however, there were 24.7 crore in total, with 12.84 crore in government schools as against 4.34 crore in private. The rest were in ‘Aided’ or ‘Others’

Nagaland had no schools under ‘Aided’ or ‘Other Category.’

Initiated in 2012-13, the UDISE initiated in 2012-13 is one of the largest Management Information Systems on School Education covering more than 1.5 million schools, 8.5 million teachers and 250 million children. UDISE+ is an updated and improved version of UDISE.
