Hundreds to run in Mokokchung Marathon

Mokokchung, March 20 (MExN): The route has been mapped, the logistics set in place, and the runners numbering in hundreds are set to participate in one of the biggest marathon races in Mokokchung district on March 22.  

The Mokokchung Marathon 2018 is being organized by the Mokokchung Press Club (MPC) in partnership with the Water and Sanitation Support Organization (WSSO), PHED – Mokokchung Division in commemoration of World Water Day on the theme ‘Nature for Water’.  

Participants from Mokokchung, Tuensang, Zunehboto and other places have already confirmed their participation for the marathon which will give away a total prize money of Rs 1 lakh along.  

The Mokokchung Press Club (MPC), on the request of the WSSO – PHED, Mokokchung Division – took up the initiative as part of its annual social activity and to highlight the importance of water – its conservation and assiduous usage – to the Naga community.  

Even as the countdown begins, all eighteen wards under Mokokchung town have expressed their support towards the event; the district administration and the police have also conveyed their strong support.  

The apex civil bodies – Ao Senden, Watsu Mungdang, AKM and MTLT – have also conveyed their active participation and support while the Mokokchung Village Council conveyed that it would be calling out all the villagers to cheer and extend support on the day.  

To make the race more professional, the organizers have roped in the expertise of Team Spearhead Motorsport Initiative (SMI) as the technical support team to marshal the whole race. SMI is a motorsport organization which has organized and taken part in different motor events in Mokokchung district. Their involvement – with their professionalism and expertise – has already been enunciated after they mapped the whole route for the March 22 Marathon race.  

The route for male runners will traverse 13.2 Km while the female runners will run a length of 5.2 kilometres. Nonetheless, there is no bar for participation – age, community, or gender; all are invited to participate.  

The prize money has been set at Rs. 20,000 (1st), Rs 15,000 (2nd) and Rs 10,000 (3rd) for the male category. For the female category, the prize has been set at Rs 15,000 (1st), Rs 10,000 (2nd) and 5,000 (3rd). Besides, there will also be consolation prizes for fifteen runners (10 male and 5 females) who make through after the winners.
