Ungma, April 8 (MExN): Dr Jamir formally declared his candidature for the 26th Aonglenden Assembly Constituency here today with an assertion that he needs of a revival in politics, while Congress leaders led by CLP Leader Tokheho Yepthomi and others asserted that the services of Dr SC Jamir is needed for the Naga people appealed for sending him to lead the Naga people once again.
It must have been perhaps one of Dr SC Jamir’s best political speeches ever with the audience applauding to every point he spoke at the formal meeting held at the Bapu Tsubo, Ungma. More than two hundred vehicles packed with supporters crossed the main police point in the town and converged at the venue.
Speaking at the declaration programme, the former Chief Minister and former Governor of Goa and Maharashtra states, Dr SC Jamir said that he need a revival in politics for the sake of the Naga people, the Ao people and the people of the Aonglenden Assembly Constituency.
Narrating he was baptized into politics at the same Bapu Tsubo venue during the second Naga Peoples’ Convention on 24th may, 1958 where he was elected as the Joint Secretary of the Convention, Dr Jamir said that ever since his ‘baptism’ he has been walking, talking and steering the Naga politics for the past sixty years.
He recollected his speech at the 2nd Naga Peoples’ convention at Ungma, when he told the audience that there are three kinds of animals – ape, donkey and tiger. The ape represents primitiveness that does not want to move forward and never listens to anyone. The donkey never moves forward until the load is very heavy (so are the Nagas who does not move until the trouble becomes too unbearable). The tiger represents violence. He said that these three animal traits in human beings have to be ‘killed’. However, though the ‘ape’ has been killed, the ‘donkey’ and ‘tiger’ still remains to be killed so that the people can live in peace, harmony and understanding. He said that there are many leaders who aspire to work for the Naga people but can do nothing out of fear. He declared that he will not be afraid to speak the truth.
Saying that an ‘earthquake’ will equally affect the Aonglenden people or the Naga people, Jamir said that the Naga society is going through a time as if ‘earthquake’ will come and said that in such a tumultuous time, he is coming to the forefront to lead the people. Dispelling any doubts about old age, Jamir said that God has blessed him with good health strength. He also said that his present life is gifted by the grace of God since he escaped from ‘the jaws of death four times’.
“And I will willingly donate this life for you, for the people, for the Ungma citizens” he declared. He appealed the Ungma village council and the citizens to allow him have a revival in politics. ‘Please let me be reborn in politics here again. I need a revival,” said Dr Jamir, ‘I am not contesting for Chief Minister; I have worked for five times. I am not contesting for Governor; I have worked for two terms as Governor. I am contesting for you (the people),’ said Dr Jamir in front of the applauding audience. CLP leader Tokheho Yepthomi while expressing happiness over Jamir’s candidature for the 26th Aonglenden Constituency strongly appealed the people of the constituency especially the Ungma citizens to ‘send’ Jamir who had been a leader of the Naga people to once again lead the Nagas.
‘His service is needed here in Nagaland,” said the CLP leader in Nagamese, “We Nagas have brought him here (26th Aonglenden Constituency) for the service of the Nagas. We are not bringing him for a representative. He was a Naga leader and we are asking you to send him as a leader of the Nagas.’
Former NPCC president and MLA KV Pusa while dedicating the meeting to the memory of late Nungshizenba Longkumer who was the representative from the constituency and on whose seat the by-election was being conducted called for a minute silence in memory of the departed soul. Pusa while asserting that Jamir is a personality known even in the national levels asserted that it was ‘a question of pride and retaining it’. He maintained that it is up to the people of Ungma village to decide whether to retain that pride or not. He therefore, appealed the villagers retain the pride of the people by sending Dr Jamir to once again lead the Naga people. Leaders from the DCC, Mahila, DYC, NSUI and others spoke at the more than three hour meeting.
Ungma Village Council Chairman, Imolemba while congratulating Jamir for being inducted into the AICC CWC, appealed the candidates not to create trouble during the election campaign. With the formal declaration of Dr Jamir about his candidature for the by-election, the election campaigning is set to roll in full motion. With no other know dandidates from other parties, this by-election is slated to be a straight fight between the Congress and the ruling NPF party.
