JALUKIE, MARCH 21 (MExN): ICAR Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Peren, organized a one-day "Horticulture Fair" on March 21 at the KVK office in Jalukie. The event, part of the Krishi Swarna Samriddhi Week program, aimed to promote sustainable agricultural practices and improve the livelihoods of farmers in Peren.
Dr Patu K. Zeliang, ACTO-GPB of KVK Peren, chaired the event, which featured presentations from various agricultural experts. Dr K.L Meena, Principal Scientist & Head of KVK Peren, highlighted the importance of diversifying horticultural crop cultivation and shared success stories of vegetable and fruit farmers in the district.
Dr Prashant Kalal, SMS-Fruit Science at KVK Peren, gave the keynote address, discussing the role of fruits and vegetables in daily diets and advocating for the cultivation of perennial crops to generate regular income.
The event also featured a speech by C. Dory Yanthan, DFO/PD-ATMA, Peren district, who discussed the role of horticultural crops in improving the income of small and marginal farmers. Dr I. Shakuntala, Dean of the College of Veterinary Science at CAU, Jalukie, spoke about post-harvest processing of fruits and vegetables, including proper labelling, packaging, and market linkage.
Various stalls at the Horticulture Fair were evaluated by guests, including officials from the Department of Horticulture and KVK staff. Awards were given to the best stalls, including those from FPO Peren, FPO Jalukie, FPO Athibung, and FPO Tening. Vegetable seed baskets containing seeds of chili, brinjal, coriander, palak, and French beans were also distributed to farmers. The event included three technical sessions during which C. Dory Yanthan spoke on "Round the Year Fish Production for Livelihood Improvement," Pezavitso Haralu, HEA from DHO, Peren District addressed "Underutilized and Exotic Horticulture Crops for Economic Upliftment” and Dr Prashant Kalal gave a lecture on "Fruit Crop Cultivation for Livelihood Enhancement."
