ICAR KVK Peren promotes ‘boosting rice production for sustainable food security’

Peren, March 20 (MExN): The ICAR Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Peren organised a one-day workshop on ‘boosting rice production for sustainable food security’ along with the launching of the Krishi Swarna Samriddhi programme at New Beisumpui village on March 19.  Dr KL Meena, Principal Scientist & Head, KVK Peren emphasised the importance of Integrated Farming Systems (IFS) as a sustainable approach for maximizing farmers’ income while preserving natural resources.  Dr Meena highlighted the success stories of the farmers in the other KVK adopted villages which could be replicated in their village.

Neivah, Agriculture Officer, Jalukie Department of Agriculture, shared knowledge on rice production technology tailored for lowland ecosystems, addressing key challenges and exploring future opportunities. She suggested green manuring, summer ploughing and crop rotation in lowland paddy to improve soil health and break insect disease cycles along with SRI and direct seeding method when monsoon is delayed.

Dr Patu K Zeliang, spoke on seed production technology for rice, highlighting techniques to improve seed quality and yield potential. The cultivation practices of summer vegetables that could be integrated in the jhum fields, she added.

Agri tools, Neem oils, Vegetable seeds and seed storage bags were distributed to all the 68 farmers who attended the programme. The event concluded with an interactive session.
