ICAR Nagaland Centre conducts awareness on sustainable agriculture

DIMAPUR, MARCH 22 (MExN): The ICAR RC for NEH Region. Nagaland Centre, Medziphema organised a one day awareness cum farmer-scientist interaction programme on the theme “Adaptation and coping strategies to climate change for Sustainable Agriculture in Nagaland” at Viswema Village, Jakhama block, Kohima district on March 12 under Gramin Krishi Mausam Sewa Project. 

During the programme, farmers were apprised about the importance of Agro Advisory Services provided under the GKMS project. Meghdoot app, developed by Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) and ICAR was also highlighted, which provides location, crop and livestock specific weather based agro-advisories to the farmers. 

The app seamlessly aggregates contextualized agro- advisories at district level issued by Agro-Met Field Units (AMFUs) every Tuesday and Friday with forecast and historical weather data for the farmer's benefits. The app provide forecast relating to rainfall, temperature, humidity, wind speed and direction which play a critical role in agricultural operations. 

Farmers were also encouraged to utilize the service of Kisan Mobile Advisory Service and whatsapp where SMS are send biweekly (Tuesday and Friday) in nagamese on weather based for contingency planning and betterment of their livelihood.

Farmers were also imparted knowledge on scientific management of livestock, use of artificial insemination in pig for breeding; management practices of various horticultural crops and vegetables. They were encouraged to adopt technologies being promoted by the ICAR Nagaland centre.

Farmer-Scientist interaction programme were also organise in which resource persons from ICAR Nagaland centre addressed the queries raised by the farmers. Altogether 40 farmers attended the programme.
