‘Iconic Week for Wetlands’ celebrated in Wokha

WOKHA, OCTOBER 10 (MExN): The Wokha Forest Division and Doyang Plantation Division celebrated ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav–Iconic Week’ 2021 from October 4 to 10 at Doyang Reservoir Wetland, Wokha.

To commemorate the occasion, a set of activities was conducted by the two divisions under Nagaland State Wetlands Authority during the Wetland Iconic Week 2021. The events included registration of Wetland Mitras; installation of signage at Doyang dam site; setting up of suggestion box; distribution of t shirts to Wetland Mitras; bird watching for the local eco club at Amur Falcon roosting area, Pangti; and plastic free cleanliness drive at tourist view point, Doyang.

An awareness program was also held at the Recreational Hall, NEEPCO Doyang. Amur Falcon was declared as “Wetland Ambassador” of Doyang Reservoir Wetland. Various organisations were also recognised for their effort to protect Doyang Reservoir Wetland and the biodiversity in and around it. 

District Anglers Wokha Nagaland (DAWN) was felicitated for their effort to ban use of dynamites and other destructive means of fishing at Doyang Reservoir wetland. The Amur Falcon Roosting Area Union (AFRAU) and Pangti Village Council were also recognised for their effort to protect the migratory Amur Falcons that roost at Pangti, on the banks of the reservoir.

Participants were from NEEPCO (North-East Electric Power Corporation Limited), CISF Force Personnel (NEEPCO), Vivekananda Kendra Vidyalaya (VKV) School, Doyang, Natural Nagas, DAWN (District Anglers Wokha Nagaland), AFRAU (Amur Falcon Roosting Area Association, Pangti village, Pangti Village Council, local eco-clubs, Wetland Mitras and Division staff. The programme was funded by Ministry of Environment Forests & Climate Change, Government of India.
