Dimapur, November 3 (MExN): In a bid to check the unabated influx of illegal migrants into the district, the Angami Students’ Union today directed the ‘non-local’ residents in Kohima to report at the its headquarter office in Kohima from November 6-25 at 9 am with all necessary documents to get their identity verified.
The directive to the non-locals in Kohima comes as per the standing resolution of the Naga Students Federation and the reaffirmation of the resolution taken by all the ranges’ councils of the Angami Students’ Union in its assembly, said Zakie Khate, Secretary of Coordination Committee on Non-Locals in a press statement. “The influx of illegal migrants in our state is presenting an alarming state of affairs,” said Khate, “The Angami Students’ Union as a social league functioning for the advancement of our society and its future is extremely alarmed.”
This latest directive of the Angami Students’ Union gains significance, as the Ao Students’ Conference (AKM) successfully took out an anti-illigal Bangladeshi immigrant drive under the code name ‘Survival 2007’. The alarm over the demographic change in the North east region, especially in Nagaland due to infiltration of illegal migrants has been a matter of concern for many Naga intellectuals for the past many years.
Taking the case of Tripura, which has been overwhelmed by the illegal migrants from Bangladesh, the ASU opined that the survival of the Nagas is also threatened. “The fate of our culture, our identity, our land and our very survival needs to be seriously considered. It needs serious handling of thought and action,” the ASU asserted.
In this regard the Angami Students Union asked the state government machineries to be more efficient. “The situation demands us of a shared responsibility in this common crisis or to be a crisis in the near future,” the ASU proclaimed, while calling upon the state government and the administration to analyze its efficiency in administering its duties. “With renewed vitality, this (Illegal migration) subject must be seriously looked upon,” the ASU held.
However, the ASU also reminded that utmost care is taken for preventing the harassment to genuine Indians. It may be mentioned that illegal Bangladeshi infiltration has been a matter of concern for the people of Nagaland for many years. However, little could be done to this effect since any action against the illegal migrants invites criticism from other states especially Assam.
Nonetheless, the Ao Students Conference (AKM) on October 5 have served notice to the State DGP alleging that Muslim banks and rogue government agencies like Pakistan’s ISI aiding Islamization-drives into NE in their mission to establish a “Greater Bangladesh” in the North East region India.. The AKM alleged of a clandestine agreements and decisions by Islamic intelligence agencies like the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) in the activities of the illegal Bangladeshis.
