Vethozo Lohe, who won gold in the 78 kg Youth Category (right arm) at the International Federation of Armwrestling (IFA) World Arm Wrestling Championship, touched down in Dimapur on October 2.
The 19 year-old arm wrestling champion was given a warm reception at the airport by an ecstatic crowd led by the Western Chakeshang Hoho, family and supporters celebrating his victory in the competition held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Lohe competed in the tournament alongwith one other competitor from Nagaland, Avilie Zuyie.
Zuyie, from Rüsoma village, Kohima, secured the fourth place in the right arm under the 86 kg youth category and the fifth place in the overall left arm category. Lohe also finished 4th in the left arm category. They represented both India and Nagaland.
Lohe attributed the success to three years of dedicated preparation and support provided by his mentor, Yanpvuo Kikon and trainer, Neli Dominic, emphasising the importance of faith in God and hard work.
Dietho Rhakho, advisor, Western Chakhesang Hoho, while congratulating the world champion, encouraged the Naga youths to pursue their dreams in sports, music and innovative ventures. He highlighted the potential for success and urged Naga youth to bring pride to their community and make their mark on the world stage.
He said that Lohe’s achievement has not only brought recognition to Phek district, but also to the Tizu area, an area regarded as needing much in terms of development. Rhakho noted that neighbouring states like Manipur have gained recognition through sports promotion and urged the Nagaland government to invest more in sports and reward deserving athletes to inspire youth participation.
Lohe’s father expressed gratitude to Yanpvuo Kikon, the mentor, and the Nagaland government for their support, along with well-wishers who contributed to Lohe’s success. The Chairman of Tizu Area Welfare Union also delivered a brief speech during the welcoming program.
The 19-year-old Naga athlete secured the gold medal by defeating Georgian arm wrestler Luka Tabagua in the finals in the 78 kg category.
