“Ignorance of law is not an excuse”

Dimapur, August 13 (MExN): A seminar on legal awareness was organized by City Law College Students’ Union on the theme “Know your legal rights” at AIDA, DBHSS, Circular Road, Dimapur. The seminar was conducted by LACC, under the auspices of the State Legal Services Authority (SLSA). 

Hukato Swu, District Sessions Judge, chief guest for the seminar informed the gathering that SLSA was formed to see that people are not denied justice solely because of economic hindrance. “People with income below 50,000 annually will be given free legal aid so that even the poor may have access to justice” he further informed. The second target of legal services, he said was to disseminate information, to have programmes to make people aware of their rights. 

Resource person, Additional Public Prosecutor, Akum also spoke on the topic ‘Basic Fundamental Rights.’ He expounded on the importance of Human Rights, Consumer Rights, Right to Motor Vehicle Act, right to Education and Right to Information Act.  He also exhorted the gathering to be aware of the role of law and felt that our society today suffers from corruption mainly because of ignorance of law by the people. “To take out corruption, we should be aware of our legal rights” he said. 

Leonard Aier, Resource Person, principal of City Law College, speaking on the topic “Career prospects in Legal profession” expressed that today, legal profession has become one of the most important profession especially in a democracy. He stated “Today, the legal profession has become so important that if the legal system is not healthy, the state is not healthy.” He also said that when people think of legal profession, they think it pertains only to advocates which he said, is a narrow perception. Career prospects for those who are qualified in law in Nagaland may not be that encouraging, he said, however he felt that its very important and that we need honest, educated people in the legal profession of Nagaland. 

The programme was chaired by Akum, Advocate. Earlier, welcome address was delivered by Hutoka Shikhu (President CLCSU) and invocation led by Kalivi, Lecturer (CLC). Vijay Sharma introduced the chief guest and resource person to the gathering. The seminar was attended by students of Dimapur Government College, Pranabananda Womens College, Eastern Christian College, Unity College, Tetso College, various student bodies, NGO’s and media personnel.
