IGNOU celebrates its 22nd Convocation

Kohima | April 2 : Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) Nagaland have joined along with the rest of the country in celebrating its 22nd Convocation held today, at Nagaland Teacher Education (NCTE) Kohima with Parliamentary Secretary, IPR, Economics & Statistics R. Tohanba, gracing the occasion as the guest of honor. Altogether 95 students graduated, and were honored with certificates in various subjects and fields.
Congratulating the successful candidates, the parliamentary secretary also congratulated the Vice Chancellor Nagaland and IGNOU fraternity for the achievements made in the field of Distance Education in the country and making its international presence in 36 countries. Tohanba was appreciative to IGNOU where with the principle of age no bar, place, pace and inclusive education for inclusive growth, it has emerged as the Mega University with a student strength of more than three million within the span of its 25 years of existence.
He heartedly congratulated IGNOU for emerging as the global leader in open distance learning. Keeping in mind the expansion of the institution, Tohanba maintained that earlier the institution was the lone centre activated in Nagaland under Shillong Regional Centre at BNCTE Kohima, whereas it now has 30 centre’s and Nagaland has full fledged Regional centre since its inception that has been trying to provide access to higher education to all section of the society and also has produced good number of educationist, policy makers, bureaucrats and force of the state.
“Efficient and effective utilization of the existing knowledge can create comprehensive wealth of the nation and also improve the quality of life”, said Tohanba adding that human capital is basically formed by educating and training.
He was also optimistic that with the open distance learning, the system of education where the learners are allowed to access education at their own place, at their own level, and at their own pace, and supplementing the academic programme with the use of ICT will be most suited particularly for prospective learners from the less privileged sections of the society. He urged upon IGNOU to further strengthen its effort to reach and make accessible to higher education to the people living in remote and far-flung area in the state.
Presenting Regional Directors Report, Dr. T. Iralu Regional Director said the regional centre has ten regular study centre’s, six special study centre’s, ten programme study centre and four IGNOU CNRI knowledge centre under its jurisdiction where there are 66 academic programmes that have been activated and has a total accumulated student strength of 11253 students registered for various programmes (2002 till date). He also affirmed that the regional centre is making all efforts to take higher education to the door steps of the hitherto unreached, by activating study centre’s in all districts in Nagaland where except for Phek district, study centre’s as well as exam centre’s are activated in all districts, headquarters of the state and also the centre organizes need based training programmes for educated unemployed
youth in the state.
Iralu also disclosed that the centre will be introduced in Phek District very soon. Elaborating on its activities in Nagaland, the director said that the centre has DRS terminals facility where six study centre’s has EDUSAT Terminals facilities and ten centre’s have been activated for conducting term end exam, also the centre has two exam centre’s for conducting OPENMAT exams for the management programme. Thereby besides looking after the management and administrative aspects, the regional centre also provide student supports service to the students and it monitors admission and exam related matters in the state.
