Illegal drug factory busted, brown sugar worth Rs 120 Cr recovered

An illegal drug manufacturing unit was busted in Manipur on Saturday. The factory was busted by a joint team of Assam Rifles and state police at Kamu Saichang area under Maphou Dam police station of Thoubal district.


Processed brown sugar and heroin worth around Rs 120 crore in the international market were recovered during the operation, according to a press release of the IGAR(S) which claimed to be a major breakthrough in the drive against illicit drugs trafficking in the state.


The joint security force team team launched the operation busting the illegal factory under the aegis of HQ IGAR (South) based on a corroborated specific inputs, the press release also said.


The busted factory was being utilized to extract Morphine from Opium which was further processed into Brown Sugar and Heroin, the press release alleged. 


During the operation, the team recovered approximately 29 kg of Heroin Brown Sugar (Solid), 20 litres of Brown Sugar (Liquid), eight kg of Marijuana including equipment and chemicals used for processing of drugs. 


The drug after processing was being supplied in loose form to the youth, it added.


A woman was apprehended by the police in this connection while the owner of house in which the drug processing plant was functioning is presently absconding, the press release further said.


 “The swift operation reflects the commitment and resolve of Assam Rifles to curb the drug menace from northeast region by targeting the manufacturing and distribution network by means of similar surgical operations and sustained efforts to choke influx of drugs from neighbouring drug havens by means of effective manning of the Indo-Myanmar border,” the IGAR(S) press release also said.
