Kohima, February 8 (MExN): The Narcotic Cell of Police Headquarters (PHQ), Kohima, seized a large quantity of illegally smuggled foreign cigarettes and suspected heroin during a special surprise Motor Vehicle Check Post (MVCP) drive conducted on the night of February 7.
According to the police, the MVCP drive was carried out as part of routine enforcement measures. During the operation, personnel of the Narcotic Cell detected and seized approximately 10 soap cases of suspected heroin.
At the same time, the team intercepted and seized a large quantity of illegally smuggled foreign cigarettes, valued at around Rs.75 lakh. The cigarettes were found to be transported without valid customs documents.
The seized cigarettes are suspected to be of foreign origin and were allegedly intended for illegal distribution, resulting in revenue loss to the government and violations of Customs laws.
As per established legal procedure, the seized foreign cigarettes have been handed over to the Customs Department for further investigation and necessary legal action under the relevant provisions of the Customs Act and other applicable laws. The narcotic seizure is being dealt with separately under the appropriate provisions of law.
The Narcotic Cell, PHQ, will continue such surprise enforcement drives and maintain close coordination with Customs and other agencies to curb drug trafficking and smuggling activities, according to a release issued by SP Narcotics.
