With the objective to remove  bottlenecks in the state’s administrative machinery, the Nagaland government has conveyed to the Centre on the need to take appropriate steps for modernization the district administrations. However, response is still awaited from the Ministry of Home Affairs. Home Minister Imkong L Imchen said this while addressing the 36th general conference of the Nagaland Civil Service Association  here this morning at the Zonal Council Hall.

Asserting that the government has been creating several administrative centres across the state, Imkong, however said both infrastructure and manpower are still found  wanting. The minister said infrastructure and ministerial staffers  have to go together.

The minister urged the officers, particularly EACs to visit villages more often and interact with the villagers in order to understand their social and economic conditions as well as their living standards. Such  a practice, he said, will enable the officers to learn more about the ground realities of the rural people and so be in a position to serve the people better.

Also speaking at the occasion, Chief Secretary Lalhuma said  modernization of administrations along the lines of the police is badly needed in Nagaland. From the state government’s side, he said, Rs. 5 crore has been set aside for repairing buildings housing administrative centers in the state. Touching on the recent government’s directive that every administrative officer must visit two villages in a month, he regretted that the result has not been ‘satisfactory’ so far.

In this respect, he asked the officers to comply with the directive. Asking the officers to compile village profile as mandatory, he also felt that they should have a spirit of adventure and come up with innovative idea.

Also stressing on the need to keep in touch with the people, he asked the officers to know more about the people so that they will feed them the necessary information and share ‘native wisdom,’ which in return will go a long way in serving the people better. Earlier, the function was chaired by Angou I. Thou while NCSA president Lithrongla G. Chishi delivered presidential address. Vote of thanks was proposed by NCSA vice president Mhabemo Yanthan.
