Kohima, March 5 (MExN): The District Agriculture Office, Kohima organized a monthly meeting of the district heads agri and allied sector including ATMA at DAO conference hall here on March 4 last. Kohima DAO Vizonyu Liezie highlighted the agricultural activities and its achievements within Kohima district.

Commissioner & Secretary For Agriculture And Agriculture Production I. Imkonglemba Ao exhorted the gathering. The APC expressed happiness over the success story of System of Rice Intensification (SRI) method under National Food Security Mission (NFSM) that was adopted by farmers at Tora field, Kezoma.

The SRI is an evolving set of ‘practices, principles, and philosophies’ aimed at increasing the productivity of irrigated rice by changing the management of plants, soil, water and nutrients. It is learnt that since the introduction of SRI method, the volume of manpower in cultivation activities came down. It also resulted better yield against the traditional practice of paddy cultivation.

Imkonglemba said that time has to focus double cropping to meet growing demand. He stressed that the land should not be kept idle but utilize the same properly for double cropping.

He stressed on the need to bring convergence of all the programmes in the same location, saying that apart from practice of the main paddy cultivation, maize, floriculture, poultry, piggery, sericulture, fishery pond, oilseeds can also be taken up at Tora field.

Further, the APC stressed on the need to indentify the genuine and progressive farmers. The programme was followed by Republic Day Award Feast wherein DAO Kohima got the award for consecutive year.
