Newmai News Network Imphal | July 28 For the second consecutive day today, the Manipur police and students exchanged altercations – one at Keishampat area and the other at BT Road – both in the heart of Imphal. Two groups of students are fighting on two separate issues. A student leader has been arrested during today’s protest. One group of students has been demanding that a bill should be passed in the assembly regarding the constitutional protection and seat reservation for Indigenous people. This group demands that non-local should be barred from contesting elections in Manipur. The movement is being spearheaded by Kangleipak Students’ Association (KSA). The other group is demanding that an FIR that was lodged sometime ago against some students on teacher transfer fiasco be withdrawn. Students of Johnstone Higher Secondary School carried out the protest today in this regard. President of KSA Moirangthem Lakshman and few others were arrested by the police this afternoon as the altercation intensified at Keishampat area. Till the filing of this report the students were still in police custody. The volunteers of KSA also tried to enter the BJP office in Imphal during the protest. Meanwhile, police resorted to tear gas shelling as students of Johnstone Higher Secondary School confronted the police. The students of Johnstone Higher Secondary School tried to carry out a sit-in-protest this morning at BT Road but the police foiled the plan. The situation became tense which led to strong confrontation between the two parties. It may be recalled that sometime ago in the agitations carried out by students of CC Higher Secondary School against transfer of teachers from their school, a police personnel sustained head injuries from stone pelting by the students and consequently an FIR was lodged against them.
