Kohima | June 14 : A training programme for butchers and other meat & poultry workers and slaughter house improvement for better quality meat and safer environment was held here today under the aegis of the Indian Institute of Crop Processing Technology, National Meat & Poultry Processing, Ministry of Food Processing Industries and Kohima Municipal Council.
As sought by Kohima Butchers Union, ADC Kohima Alun Hangsing assured that construction of separate butcher shed will be taken up by the authority. As desired by the butchers, he also stated that exposure trip would also be done for butchers, which would enable them to take glimpse of the butcher houses in other parts of the country. In regard to shortage of water being faced at the butcher house, the ADC assured to extend KMC tanker in every possible manner. In the meantime, he called for a cleaner environment of butcher house in the state capital. To achieve this, he said everyone has to own responsibility. We have to begin from here (Kohima) so that other districts would follow the suit, he said.
The Butchers Union stated that they have been trying its best to maintain a clean environment of butcher house. However, they faced problem like non-presence of separate butcher house, poor water supply, power etc. and appealed to the concerned authority to address such hurdle.
Dr. Walling, deputy director veterinary & animal husbandry asserted that the butchers are holding the key of public health and called upon them to do something good for humanity and healthy life. He also called upon them to join hand together and contribute for better health by 2020, which he said would help achieve the goal of “Health for all” by 2020.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Inato, VAS, Dimapur urged the meat traders/butchers to ensure that they are well aware of the meat sources, hygienic meat and public safety. He also highlighted Antemortem inspection of food animals, which identifies animals not fit for human consumption. He also touched on the mode of selecting animals for slaughtering. Stating that Nagaland is spending Rs. 250 crore annually on import of meat from outside the state, he said that such factor was a matter of great concern for all. Toward this, he called upon the butchers to know the quality of animals from various sources and ensure that hygienic meat matter most. On Zoonotic diseases, Dr. Inato said the infections are naturally transmitted between vulnerable animals and human being. In this, he urged the butchers to be well aware of this and ensure that health record is taken into account. Prof. M. Hazarika, College of Veterinary Science, AAU Guwahati also spoke on the topic “Skills on meat slaughter and abattoir management.”
