As the results of the historic June 26 elections to urban local bodies were declared on Saturday, aside from the dominance of the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP), an interesting outcome was Independent candidates winning more seats than any other party.
The final results summary provided by the State Election Commission informed that while the NDPP won 153 out of a total of 278 seats, Independents were the second-largest winners with 56 seats, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was a distant third with 25 seats.
In addition, among the three municipal councils and 21 town councils that went to polls, Independent candidates secured an absolute majority by winning 7 out of 11 seats in Pfütsero. In Chozouba, out of 9 seats, Independents won 5 while NDPP won 4.
Furthermore, in Mangkolemba, Independents tied with NDPP by winning 4 seats each out of 9, while the Indian National Congress secured 1 seat.
The other town councils with a non-NDPP majority were Niuland (BJP with 6 out of 9 seats), Bhandari (Naga People’s Front with 6 out of 9 seats), and Phek (NPF with 7 out of 9 seats).
It remains to be seen how it played out in the coming days as councils are formally constituted.
