In remembrance: Gorkhas in Dimapur commemorate Balidan Diwas

Dimapur, August 25 (MExN):  The Dimapur Gorkha Union (DGU) and Gorkha Students Union Dimapur commemorated the 76th Martyrs Day of the First Indian Gorkha Martyr, Major Durga Malla (INA) on August 25 at the DGU Finance Secretary’s residence.

According to a press release, DGU Chairman Kumar Subba gave a brief account on the life of Amar Shaheed Durga Malla. ‘Today we live in this country with freedom as a result of the great sacrifice made by these men,’ Subba said.

The release stated that the nation remembers the sacrifice and contributions of Major Durga Malla of the Indian National Army, with the observance of Balidan Diwas or Martyr’s Day. Major Durga Malla was hanged to death by the British on August 25, 1944 for his patriotic activities, it said.

Stating that many Indian Gorkhas have fought and made sacrifices for the nation, the release stated that Durga Malla epitomizes “the fighting spirit and ardent patriotism of Indian Gorkhas.”
