Inaugural Inter-School Basketball Tournament underway in Mkg

The 1st Inter High School & Higher Secondary School Annual Basketball Tournament 2025, organized by the Basketball Association Mokokchung District (BAMD) under the aegis of the Nagaland Basketball Association (NBA), officially commenced on Thursday at the BAMD Basketball Court, Imkongmeren Sports Complex, Mokokchung. The tournament is being held under the theme “Forging Future.”

Gracing the opening ceremony as Special Guest, Sentinenla, District Education Officer (DEO), Mokokchung, lauded the organisers for reviving the district’s basketball culture and providing young students with a platform to showcase their talents. Reflecting on the past, she recalled the once-vibrant basketball tradition in Mokokchung and expressed optimism about its resurgence.

“This inter-school basketball tournament is more than just a game—it is a platform where the leaders of tomorrow forge their future,” she said. “Events like this remind us that sports are a powerful tool in shaping character and fostering unity.” Emphasizing the holistic role of education, she added, “Academic achievements are essential, but physical fitness and participation in games are equally vital for our students’ all-round development.”

Thirteen teams—comprising nine boys’ teams and four girls’ teams—from nine schools across Mokokchung district are participating in the tournament. The participating schools include Queen Mary Higher Secondary School, Mayangnokcha Government Higher Secondary School, Eden Academy, Christian Residential Higher Secondary School, Straightway Higher Secondary School, Town Higher Secondary School, Clark Memorial Higher Secondary School (Impur), Yajen Aier Government High School (Mopungchuket), and Changki Government High School.

In the inaugural matches, Eden Academy defeated Government High School Changki in the boys’ category with a decisive score of 38–12, while in the girls’ division, Mayangnokcha Government Higher Secondary School secured victory over Eden Academy with a scoreline of 16–2.
The tournament will conclude on July 12.
