Incessant rains cripple normal life in M'pur

State Cabinet reviews flood-like  situation   Newmai News Network Imphal | March 31   With the incessant rainfall over the past two days triggering flood-like situation and crippling life in many parts of the state, Manipur Cabinet today reviewed the flood-like situation in parts of Imphal and other areas of the state.   A flood control room with telephone numbers 2450195 and 2451550 has been opened at Khoyathong here which will be kept operational 24X7.   During the Cabinet meeting Chief Minister N Biren Singh instructed the Deputy Commissioners to visit affected areas and to submit a report. The meeting chaired by the Chief Minister was held at the CM office’s conference hall, as a per a DIPR press release.   The Cabinet decided to provide immediate safe drinking water and relief materials to the affected people. Biren Singh further asked officials to identify locations badly affected by flooding.   Incessant rainfall over the past two days has triggered flood-like situation in many parts of the twin capital cities of Imphal East and Imphal West.   Lives in some parts of Tamenglong district were also crippled where power cut has aggravated the problem for villagers who are facing waterlogging. Heavy rains resulted to the swelling of rivers flowing through the hill district, a report said.   Traffic movement was disrupted on the landslide-prone National Highway 37, Imphal-Jiribam road section of Tamenglong due to continuous rainfall which triggered landslides at Kotlen and Sinam villages on the highway, according to a police report.   The Cabinet also decided to constitute an action committee to tackle the problem of flood in the state. The committee will monitor the flooding situation and take actions for taking up relief programmes.   Irrigation and Flood Control minister Letpao Haokip placed the preliminary flooding report like the level of rainfall during the past 24 hours in millimetres, water level of major rivers in metres and position of barrages and regulators.   2  rain related dead Meanwhile, two people were killed due to torrential rains in Manipur, IANS reported on Friday quoting police source. Nilakanta Das, 45, was killed on Thursday in Jiribam by lightning. The second victim died when a truck skidded into a gorge alongside a slippery mountain road in Tamenglong district, it said. The heavy rains will continue for the next 48 hours accompanied by strong winds and hailstorm, it added.   For three days, the egion has been reeling under torrential rains. Reports from rural areas say cabbage and other vegetables have been extensively damaged by hailstorm. The rains have also caused several flights to be delayed or cancelled. Private bus services have stopped long-distance journeys.
