Income generation through pig farming in Longleng district - A success story

Pig rearing is an integral part of tribal livelihood in Nagaland. Most of the farmers rear pig available within the district irrespective of their breed which results in low productivity and is usually not sustainable. In order to increase the productivity of pig with good germplasm, KVK Longleng introduced proven crossbred pig ‘Rani’ (Hampshire × Ghungroo) on trial basis during the year 2017-20. Awareness training programme on improved pig rearing was conducted and interested farmers were selected for the trial. Amongst the trainees, Kupso of Yaongyimchen village took more interest in breeding. Initially inputs like piglets (3F:1M), concentrate feeds, housing materials were provided under TSP programme. The average monthly body weight gain at 2 months recorded as 9.51±2.13 kg in male and 8.1±64 kg in female which increased up to 58.8±2.5 kg and 54.3±3.6 kg respectively in 9 months with BC ratio of 1.70:1. The pigs were reared up to 10 months and 2 female and 1 male were selected for breeding purpose. The other female was sold out for meat. The females were bred at 12-13 months and on an average 9±1.63 piglets were farrowed. The mortality rate of the piglet was 5% and sold at 45 days @ Rs.3500/piglet. Some of the piglets were kept for stock replacement and the rest was sold out. Due to strict monitoring, the sows were able to farrow twice a year. The male was replaced after two years to avoid inbreeding. Within a span of 3 years, a total number of 53 piglets were produced with a net income of Rs. 1,85,500.00.  There is huge demand of good pig germplasm in the district therefore no issue for the sale of piglets.

The success of his piggery farm has inspired the other farmers in his village and neighbouring villages to take up pig breeding unit as a sustainable source of income. Till date he is continuing with his piggery farm and visible progression is seen in his income.
