Ukhrul | May 25 : The Students' Union of Pettigrew College (SUPC) Ukhrul has locked the Office of the Principal today. With Students in the College appearing exam at present, the protest is against the acute lack of basic infra-structures in the institution like the failure of the life-line needs water electricity Power and water supplies for the last eight and six months respectively.
The SUPC General Secretary MK. Miya along with the Union Former Secretary AS. Perminas, Khanso Nekheta, Finance secretary and Boby Basnet, Boys Common Room Secretary while interacting with media persons today at the College premises stated that demand is for immediate change of the Principal who failed to redress the grievances of the students welfare, and takes less care in the academic careers of the institution after the Students' Union's approached for clarification of the Student' Union problems. The Body also said that some students were unable to appear the on-going exams due to the limited time-bound information and the imposition of late fines. It was said that the Principal's Office notification on November 10, 2010 notified the submissions of exam forms without late fine with effect from November 13, 2010 and with fine from November 17. Also the late fine up to Rs 2050/- against Rs 950 for Science candidates and Rs 1600/- against Rs 700/- was charged, the Students' Union disclosed.
The immediate Charter of demands also included the conduct of regular classes in the college, to make functional all the University Grant Commission (UGC) sponsored facilities which are not functional in the college with UGC Network Resource Centre-Computer and internet Centre offering basic Computer Course, free remedial Coaching for St/OBC students, Career guidance and Counselling Cell for Students, stipends at Rs 500/- PM to selected regular ST/SC students of BPL which is done only once, Coaching classes for entry in Services(Competitive exams) for ST/SC/OBC/ Minority students and Study tours every year- the Central projects though available are not functional in the College, the Union added. There are also no toilets or Urinal for the College students, no up-date library, no furniture’s in the boys and girls Hostels and there is no proper fencing in the college.
In this regard, the Union also submitted a memorandum to the Education Minister to redress the grievances of the College students, the source further said. Only ten regular Lecturers, against 42 are available in catering the whole students, the SUPC said. “The Union would be left no other option than to intensify more drastic indefinite form of agitation lest the Government fails to response in time,” the agitating students' body said. The Union further informed that College multi-purpose Hall and Arts Academic three-storey-building constructions started for the last one year are yet to complete.
