
Kohima, July 3 (MExN): In a tragic incident, Shwensinlo Semp, a soldier in the Assam Regiment, reportedly lost his life after successfully rescuing a drowning friend at Nsonji Lake on June 30.
According to the PRO HQ IGAR (N), the incident occurred during a picnic at Nsonji Lake, Tseminyu, when one of Semp's friends encountered perilous waters and struggled to stay afloat.
He jumped into the lake and succeeded in rescuing his friend but amidst the rescue effort, his feet became entangled in the weeds and mud on the lakebed, rendering him unable to save himself, it said.
Following the incident, the Assam Rifles collaborated with civil authorities, including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and launched a coordinated operation. Semp’s body was recovered on July 1.
The release stated that the incident underscored the deep commitment of soldiers of the Indian Army to protect and serve, even in the face of personal danger.
Semp’s courageous act exemplifies the spirit of selflessness and bravery that defines the armed forces. His unwavering commitment to duty and his comrades is an inspiration to us all, it added.
Meanwhile, the Assam Rifles extended its deepest condolences to Semp’s family and loved ones over the demise.
“We mourn the loss of a true hero whose actions exemplified the highest ideals of military service,” it added
