Chennai, July 19 (IANS): The All India Chess Federation (AICF) will soon chalk out a programme of action to have a couple of Indian Grand Masters in the top 20 in the world by 2020, said a senior official. He said that as a mark of celebration of International Chess Day, cakes will be cut at two tournament venues -- National (Open and Girls) in Tumkur, Karnataka and National Sub-Junior Under 15 at Kolkata -- before the start of the game on Friday. The International Chess Day is celebrated on July 20 every year -- the day the International Chess Federation (FIDE) was founded in 1924. "Every year on July 20, wherever tournaments are held cakes are cut to mark the International Chess Day," AICF Secretary Bharat Singh Chauhan told IANS on Thursday. In a recent function, AICF President P.R.Venkatrama Raja said the Federation is chalking out a strategy so that at least two or three Indian chess players figure in the world top 10 chess players and five or six in the world top 20. Raja said good crop of young chess players are coming up in the country. Queried about the AICF targeting to nurture top Indian players so that they break into the top 20 club in the world Chauhan said: "We will be soon talking to the top players to find out their needs. Our immediate target is to win a medal in the upcoming chess Olympiad A to be held in Batumi in Georgia this September." Now former World Champion GM Vishwanathan Anand (Elo rating 2,768) with his 11th rank figures in top 20 in the world while GM P. Harikrishna (Elo 2,734) is ranked 22nd and Vidit Santhosh Gujrathi (Elo 2,718) ranked 29th in the world. The fourth top ranked player in India GM B. Adhiban (Elo 2,671) is ranked 69th in the chess world. Chauhan said the three potential players are Harikrishna, Gujrathi and Adhiban for the top 20 club while Anand is already there. Even Harikrishna has been in and out of the top 20 rankings. On the players who would be nurtured to enter the top 20 club Chauhan said: "It will be prudent to look at players with an Elo rating of 2,700 or over 2,650 rating rather than those with lower ratings." The other Indian players who have over Elo 2,650 rating are GM K.Sasikiran (2,666), S.P.Sethuraman (2,657), Parimarjan Negi (2,656) and Surya Shekhar Ganguly (2,652).
