Indigenous Knowledge as Climate Defence

As Nagaland faces erratic monsoons, warming winters, and increasingly unpredictable growing seasons, a quieter conversation is unfolding in the state, one that predates the language of "climate resilience" altogether. Long before climate change entered policy documents, Naga communities had already built ways of living that respected the land's limits.

The jhum (shifting cultivation) cycle, often misread as primitive or destructive, was in fact a carefully calibrated system of fallow periods that allowed forests to regenerate and soil to recover. Villages such as Khonoma, celebrated as India's first "green village," demonstrate how customary hunting bans, community-owned forest reserves, and generational taboos around over-harvesting once functioned as environmental law,  enforced not by government but by collective memory and social sanction.

In Chizami and other villages of the Chakhesang area, terrace farming and indigenous seed-saving practices have preserved crop diversity that offers a buffer against unpredictable rainfall. Alder-based farming systems in parts of the state show how trees and crops were integrated long before "agroforestry" became a development buzzword. These are not relics of the past; they are living systems still practised, though increasingly under strain from market pressures, land fragmentation, and the pull of migration toward towns.

The question worth asking is not whether Indigenous knowledge is romantic nostalgia, but whether it can be meaningfully integrated with contemporary climate science. Disaster preparedness frameworks designed elsewhere often overlook local ecological calendars, traditional weather-reading skills, and community-based resource governance that have kept Naga villages functioning through past droughts and landslides. Scientific climate modelling and Indigenous observation need not compete; together, they could offer a more complete picture of a warming Northeast.

There are limits to what tradition alone can address. Glacial melt, extreme rainfall events, and the scale of today's disasters were not foreseen by systems built for a slower-changing world. Indigenous knowledge should not be treated as a substitute for infrastructure, early-warning systems, or state investment in disaster response. It should instead be treated as a foundation, one that policymakers have too often ignored in favour of imported, one-size-fits-all solutions.

Nagaland's own hills hold decades, even centuries, of accumulated ecological learning. Recognising, documenting, and weaving this knowledge into formal climate strategy is not an act of sentimentality. It is, quite simply, sound policy, grounded in what has already been tested against the land.
