Dimapur, September 29 (MExN): The Association of Indigenous Minority Tribes of Nagaland (AIMTN) has demanded that the Nagaland State government review its decision and order regarding the enumeration process for the Registration of Indigenous Inhabitants of Nagaland (RIIN).
The AIMTN is a conglomeration of the four tribes—Kuki, Garo, Kachari, and Mikir (Karbi), informed a press statement received from the association’s media cell.
It further stated that the association was compelled to issue a statement after learning of a recent State Cabinet decision on RIIN, which reportedly issued a directive to the Home Department to start the enumeration of only the four tribes under the AIMTN.
While the association supports the government’s initiative on this matter, AIMTN, thus, deemed the recent order “discriminatory” against the four tribes and a violation of their fundamental rights.
RIIN was meant for all the Indigenous recognised tribes of Nagaland, not for particular tribe(s), it pointed out.
Accordingly, the association requested the state government to immediately review the Cabinet decision and subsequent order.
“If the government is not willing to treat us with equality alongside other indigenous tribes, we may seek redress for our grievances in the court of law,” it added.
