Initiating brown manuring for upland paddy in Wokha

Wokha, March 14 (MExN): Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Wokha, ICAR for NEH Region, Nagaland Centre conducted two days training cum frontline demonstration (FLD) programme on  nutrient management through brown manuring for upland paddy (var. Bhalum-3) on March 10 and 12.

Recourse person Dr. Sanjay Kumar Ray, SMS (Soil Science) said that the brown manuring, is a technique to grow dhaincha (legume crop) in standing paddy crop and kill them with the help of selective herbicide for manuring. In this practiced dhaincha crop introduce @ 25 kg ha-1 are broadcasted three days after paddy sowing and allowed to grow for 30 days and was dried by spraying 2, 4-D ethyle easter @ 3g litre-1of water or spraying with ten percent salt. After killing the color of the dhaincha residue become brown so it called brown manuring.

He also highlighted the importance of brown manuring, which provide soil available nitrogen (35 kg ha-1) to standing paddy, improves soil organic matter content and soil moisture conservation through mulching and also increase paddy yield by 4 -5 q ha-1 .

The FLD programme on brown manuring was undertaken for one hectare area to solve the nutrient management problem for upland paddy growers at Wokha districts and altogether 25 farmers from Chukitong and Yanthamo villages of Wokha districts were benefited through this programme.  Inputs such as dhaincha and high yielding paddy seeds was distributed to the participating farmers free of cost.
