Initiative to support local fish market in Kiphire

After the detection of toxic formalin being used to preserve fish in several places in Nagaland, the Fishery Department Kiphire initiated the awareness campaign on local fish production at Deluxe Point on July 4. The fish farmers from Kiphire were sensitized about the value of local fish demands and the market available in comparison to imported fish.  

SDFO Mhamo Murry briefly highlighting the purpose behind the event said that the recent seizure of formalin injected fish necessitated the department to encourage fisheries farmers to get their fish in the market which is organic and indigenous and to do away with traditional method of farming and take up scientific approach.  

He said the advantages of fish farming are it is less cost and more income for farmers as compared to other agriculture farming. He also added that locally produce fish has more nutritional value without side effects.  

Gracing the programme, Kiphire Deputy Commissioner, Mohamed Ali Shihab, IAS congratulated the Fishery department and fishers farmers for undertaking the initiative in promoting local fish market. He said along with the rest of Nagaland, administration Kiphire has also ban the sale of fish in Kiphire.  

“Fish injected with formalin is not suitable for human consumption therefore the department and fishery farmers needs to tap into the natural resources to get the locally produce fish in the market, as the demand for local fish is high,” he added.  

DC commented that fisheries farming is an livelihood income generating business to which, he called for a joint collaboration between the Administration, Fisheries Department, Fisheries Farmers' and general public to promote local fish industry.  

R. Wilfred, IAS SDO(C), Kiphire speaking at the program urged upon the Fishery department for setting up of hatchery units in Kiphire to mitigate the problems faced by fisheries farmers. He further added creating market for farmers is vital to enable farmers to sell their products and generate income and to be self- sustaining.
