It was one of the most romantic proposals in Bachelor history - and Emily Maynard's joy as she said yes was evident to all. But just one day after fans watched her tearfully agree to marry Brad Womack in an emotional finale, his fianceé has shockingly rejected him - also on television. When asked in a post-show interview last night if she was going to marry Brad, Emily's answer was brutal: 'Right now, in this instant, I love you, but no,' she said.
'Ouch.' responded Brad on the post-show special 'After the Final Rose'. 'I’m being honest,' she said. 'We have some things we need to figure out.' And in more shock revelations, host Chris Harrison revealed to viewers that Brad and Emily have actually had a brief break in their relationship, since the filming of the show.
Harrison said that the original plan for the Final Rose ceremony was in fact to be a wedding on the Caribbean island of Anguilla, where the couple had already visited on a previous Bachelor episode. He told fans that Emily, pictured here in some photos of before she was famous, briefly split with Brad between after his initial proposal and the airings of the show.
Emily, who was not wearing her Neil Lane engagement ring on the TV special, told Harrison that it 'hadn't been all roses' for the couple. She admitted that she was jealous after watching Brad get intimate with other women on the show and would ring the 36-year-old each Monday night to grill him about each episode. Brad who sat next to Emily on the couch, agreed that theirs had not been a fairytale engagement. 'It’s just been a tough go,' he said.
'Could I move to Austin today? No.' she said. She admitted to Harrison that the couple needed to work most on their bad tempers. 'Are we talking knock down, drag out fights with you two?' Chris asked the couple. 'Umm, yeah. We are.' said Emily. 'It gets pretty volatile,' Brad added. It was at that moment that Harrison introduced three of the show's successful couples to weigh in on their relationship.
The Bachelorette's Ali Fedotowsky and Roberto Martinez, and former Bachelor couples, Jason Mesnick and Molly Malanay, and Trista and Ryan Sutter all appeared in a united show of support. Sharing their stories with Emily and Brad, they urged them to stay together and work on their differences. By the end of the show, Brad was eager to put Emily's engagement ring back on her finger. 'This means more to me now than what it did that day,' he told her.
The uncomfortable and shocking interview comes as never seen before pictures of Emily before she won Brad's heart in the hit ABC TV series, emerged today. Some include snaps from Key West High School's 2004 yearbook that show the fresh-faced blonde at the age of 18 having fun in the sun with friends. Emily is originally from West Virginia but lived in Florida for a few years during her teens. Her ex-fiancé Ricky Hendrick, a NASCAR racer who was tragically killed in a plane crash in 2004, is also seen with her in some of the images.
Fans witnessed what could only be described as one of the most romantic moments in The Bachelor's history last night, when Brad got down on bended knee and presented the single mother with a stunning Neil Lane diamond ring. Emily blinked back tears in the emotional moment that fans had been waiting for. 'You're so much more to me than a leap of faith. You're the one, Em," Brad told her. 'I love you...You're my once in a lifetime.'
Brad said all of the words the 24-year-old had been waiting to hear as the couple stood in the sunset strewn gardens of famous golfer Ernie Els Wine Estate in Cape Town, South Africa.
