National Expert Committee meeting for Technological Intervention for Tribal Empowerment conducted
Dimapur, October 2 (MExN): A three-day National Expert Committee meeting for Technological Intervention for Tribal Empowerment was conducted at Hotel Saramati, Dimapur from September 26 to 28, by SEED Division DST, GoI and Nagaland Science and Technology Council (NASTEC), Department of Science and Technology.
Science for Equity, Empowerment and Development (SEED) is a Division of DST working towards technological empowerment and sustainable livelihoods at the grass root levels.
In the inaugural session, Rambir Singh Advisor, DST, GoI in his background note emphasized on “the need for development of Science and Technology for improving quality of life of tribal groups” and the need to suitable technologies for local resource management.
The meeting was aimed at finding “a road map for integrating science and technology that can benefit the tribal communities” with special focus on “securing livelihood and equity in development”, the objectives of the SEED Division. The keynote address was given by B K Bhatt, Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, GoI.
In her inaugural address, Dellirose M. Sakhrie, IAS, Commissioner and Secretary to Govt. of Nagaland, Department of Science and Technology welcomed the delegates and urged the scientific community to “understand local problems faced by each state and come up with responsive scientific solution”. She also stated that such an initiative should be looked at keeping in mind the “unique strengths and resources of each region into economically viable and vibrant activities”.
A press release from SEED informed that 11 scientists and 66 PIs attended the meeting. The gathering also reviewed 66 ongoing and new projects.
