Intense forest fire at Mt. Japfu

Kohima, January 31 (MExN): There has been a major fire incident around Mt. Japfu. The fire, which probably started on January 30 evening, has burnt the vegetation in and around the peak and has spread to the forests around, according to a press release issued by Divisional Forest Officer, Kohima. The forests on south-western part of Mt Japfu were burning intensely till late January 31 evening.  

Information about the fire was received at early hours of January 31, the release said. A team of forest personnel and youth volunteers led by Beizo Shuokhrie, ACF I/c Kohima Forest Range was sent to the spot. The team which managed to reach the peak reported that the fire probably started at the peak and has spread to the densely wooded areas to the southern and western side. Towards noon, the steep eastern part of the peak was also seen in flames.

Personnel, officers and representatives from various government and non-government organizations like District Administration, Nagaland Police, Army camp Zakhama, Fire & Emergency Services, Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority, SAPO, SAYO,youths from Kigwema, Zakhama, Phesama and Jotsoma gathered at the foothills (Pony Farm) to extend all possible assistance in extinguishing the raging fire, the release added. Parliamentary Secretary, Housing and Treasuries& Accounts VikhoYhoshü also visited the area and personally monitored the situation.

Two teams comprising youth volunteers and representatives from various departments will be sent early hours of Saturday to monitor the situation. The teams are expected to approach the area from two different directions. An aerial survey of the fire affected mountainous terrains is being planned to assess the nature and extent of fire and find possible ways of managing it. The raging fire, the note said, is expected to incinerate abundant natural wealth and have greater implications on the micro-climate of the area.
