School children from different institutions seeing competing on the first day of the "Moserbaer 1st GTC School Chess Championship 2011" organised by Guwahati Town Club Chess Foundation.
Kohima | July 12 : The "Moserbaer 1st GTC School Chess Championship 2011" organised by Guwahati Town Club Chess Foundation got underway in the GTC club house on July 11, 2011 here at Guwahati with the participation of 95 players from different schools across the state. Among the 95 registered players, 15 are international rated players with top seed Rishideep Bordoloi of Delhi Public School, Duliajan. Players from Dibrugarh, Duliajan, Digboi, Sivsagar, Mangaldoi, Jorhat, Bongaigaon, Lakhimpur, Tezpur and Barpeta are playing in this nine rounds Swiss league tournament which has total cash Prize of Rs 30,000.
Top five position holders of the tournament will also be provided free advanced training under ‘International Master’ by GTC Chess Foundation later. Earlier, in the morning the tournament was inaugurated by former Ranji Trophy Cricket Player and senior vice-president of Guwahati Town Club Sankar Dutta Lakhar in the presence of Tanmay Jyoti Mahanta, Jogen Handique, Bulbul Choudhury, Akhtaruddin Ahmed and other Club members of GTC.
According to the Director of the GTC, the 15 top seeded players won their games easily in the first round. However, 10th seeded Simran Ahmed of Pearl Valley School Guwahati lost to 58th seeded Manthan Kashyap Datta. In the second round, top seed Rishideep Bordoloi of DPS Duliajan beat Biswajyoti Das of KV Khanapara, on the second board Mahasweta Kumar of Mangaldoi Town Girls HS School got the better of Chirnjeet Boro of KV Khanapara. On the third board Dipu Pradhan of St Peter High School Nazira beat Divanga Spondon Baruah of DPS Duliajan in a keenly contested game. While on the 4th board Kaustav Kashyap Das of Srimanta Sankar Academy won his game against Debashish Parashar of DPS Duliajan. While on the 5th Board 5 seeded Pranjit Kalita of Gandhi Smriti HS School was held to a draw by lowly seeded Durlav Kalita of Axom Jatiya Vidyalaya. The third round games were in progress whiling filing of this report. The tournament will continue until July 13, 2011.
