Inter-school U-14 football tournament underway

An inter-school football tournament for the under-14 kicked off at the Greenwood School ground, Dimapur on June 20. The tournament, organised by Greenwood School under the Khelo India programme in collaboration with the Department of Youth Resources & Sports, has 12 teams— 11 from Dimapur district and 1 from Chümoukedima, in competition.

According to a tournament official, it is being co-sponsored by the HDFC Bank under the Corporate Social Responsibility. The official said that the tournament would also serve as scouting ground for emerging talent. “Standout players will be selected and trained at the Greenwood, which is a Khelo India centre,” he said. He stated that there would be no set timeframe for a talent, once selected, to take part in the coaching programme, while adding, “They can continue training if they show potential.” 

The tournament carries a cash prize of Rs 10,000 for the champions and Rs 6000 for the runners-up. 

In the first game of the tournament, Charis High Academy defeated Community Education Centre School by a 2-1 scoreline. 

One June 21, Blue Star School will take on Don Bosco Higher Secondary School.
