Kohima, October 12 (MExN): Nagaland State Social Welfare Board (NSSWB), State Resource Centre for Women (SRCW), and Poorna Shakti Kendra (PSK) under the banner of Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao observed International Day of the Girl Child at Regimental School, Thizama with the theme ‘A safe environment for our girls’ on October 11.
In her keynote address, Bano Vinito, Chairperson, NSSWB encouraged the girls to stay strong when faced with challenges. A safe environment for girls, she said, does not only mean the social environment, but includes her home, her community. It is the duty of each and everyone to create that safe environment, she asserted. She also emphasised on education as a means of empowerment and the need to value time, informed a press release.
Dr. Akuo Sorhie, Joint Director & State Program Officer (NIDDCP), Directorate of Health & Family Welfare shared that Iodine Deficiency Disorder (IDD) is the most common deficiency and also the easiest preventable deficiency disorder. She urged all the students to pledge as agents and reach out to people regarding IDD. A demonstration on the same was done.
Daisy Mezhur, Secretary, NSSWB presented ‘My letter box’ as a personal support system with the message that no one needs to suffer alone. The letter box is intended for any girl student facing any form of assault. Mezhur wrote the first letter and the letter box was officially opened by Bano Vinito and Dr. Akuo Sorhie, who presented the letter box to the Headmaster of the school.
Pradeep Thapa, Headmaster, Regimental School, Thizama expressed his gratitude to Adolescent Girls Club (AGC) which is implemented by NSSWB. He shared that AGC was formed in 2009 in the school with strength of 52 girls and 3 teacher-in-charges.
Gracy Ayee, State Coordinator, SRCW chaired the programme, while Juliana Medom, Assistant State Coordinator, SRCW concluded it.
