WOKHA, October 11 (MExN): In line with global celebrations, the Wokha district administration, Department of Social Welfare, and District Sankalp Hub for Women’s Empowerment under the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) scheme commemorated the International Day of the Girl Child 2024 at the DC conference hall in Wokha on October 11.

Delivering the keynote address, EAC Wokha Rosy Sangtam emphasized the importance of raising awareness about the challenges faced by girls and promoting their empowerment. She highlighted that the day aims to support and create more opportunities for girls, while increasing awareness of gender inequality based on gender biases. Sangtam called on the community to actively contribute to the education and empowerment of the girl child.

During the event, eight local champions of the BBBP under Mission Shakti 2024 were recognized and honored for their contributions. 

The awardees included Thungbeni Ngullie, President of the Lotha Eloe Hoho; Khyochano Ezung, Vice Chairman of the MSME PCI; Dr. Thungdeno P. Murry, Medical Officer (AYUSH); Subeno Odyuo, Assistant Sub-Inspector of Police; S. Zuchibeni Odyuo, Primary Teacher; Libenin B. Jungio, Legal Aid Defense Counsel; Chumreno W. Kikon, Sportsperson; and Mharoli Gigi Khuvung, Sportsperson.

Winners of an online photo competition were also recognized, with categories for "Father-Daughter" and "Grandfather-Granddaughter" relationships. In the Father-Daughter category, Obenro S. Kikon & Shanpan Kikon took first place, followed by Renbeni Patton & Lichumo Patton, and Liya & Zurenthung Ezung in third. 

In the Grandfather-Granddaughter category, Nzanrhoni Murry & Zubon Murry secured first place, with Khonzani & Arao Tsanglao, and Chonbeni & Yankhoromo Erui taking second and third, respectively.

Additionally, Sr. Supervisor of ICDS Erenbeni Kikon and Thungbeni Ngullie, President of the Lotha Eloe Hoho, shared brief remarks during the program.
