Introductory workshop on Astronomy and Astrophysics

Resource persons, officials and students during the ‘Introductory workshop on Astronomy and Astrophysics’ on April 5 and 6 held at Kohima Science College.
  Kohima, April 7 (MExN): Two-day ‘introductory workshop on Astronomy and Astrophysics’ was conducted at Kohima Science College, Jotsoma (KSCJ) on April 5 and 6.   The Inter-University Center for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA) provided the support and resource persons for the workshop stated a press release received here. The participants for this workshop were the Physics faculties from various parts of Nagaland and 45 students of M.Sc and B.Sc 6th semester of Physics and Mathematics.   The workshop was coordinated by Dr Chetan Kachhara, Assistant Professor, Department of Physics, KSCJ. The resource persons were Prof. Ranjan Gupta, Scientist H, IUCAA and Prof HP Singh, Department of Physics & Astronomy, Delhi University. The inaugural session Chaired by Dr M. Devrani, Head of Physics Department (KSCJ), Dr Lily Sema, Principal (KSCJ) and Dr RC Gupta, PVC, Nagaland University graced the inaugural session with words of encouragement to all the participants.   Prof. Ranjan Gupta and Prof. HP Singh delivered the talks spread over two days on ‘Telescopes and Techniques’ and ‘Physical Parameters of Stars through Observations.’ In these talks, the participants were introduced to the concepts in general astronomy: astronomical measurements, magnitude systems, distance modulus, mass and luminosity, distance measurement of stars, H-R diagram, stellar evolution, solar system, star and galaxies, basic optics and telescope and some space observations.
